9 March tutorial session 2.5 hrs. 7 students.
To support the senior tutor in giving feedback on the WIP before presenting to industry the following week.
I am based in Chelsea at the School of Product and Furniture design 2nd year BA
- The curriculum is based around Objects, whether creating new ones or looking and being inspired by existing ones, including in museums and galleries. The curriculum emphasizes the need for an awareness of historical context including that of colonization and environmental impact.
- Two weeks
- Anticipated outputs from the session (anything students will make/do):
Arrangement of the room informal. 2 tutorial group taking place on either side of the room. We sat with the student rather than formally across the table.
Informal, students arriving early were invited to sit in rather than hang around outside as in exams.
Quite fast tutorials, I think some students could have done with a slower pace, needed more time to reflect and feel safe .
Assessing progress after the crits. So it was understandable that without any progress with the work and just ideas in head or in sketch books or online could mean they hadn’t bothered but I think it would have helped to probe a little as to why they hadn’t progressed, rather than say Tutor is disappointed.
I think it is important to keep the encouragement going at this late stage, the results will be self explanatory . The dread of seeing the tutor is lessened.
Since there is a quick turn around and deadlines have to be met. It’s the nature of the course, however, it was evident that some students came in with great hopes for their work and leave a little deflated. If it was a good piece then it was important to see how it could improve but how that is put across is going to make the difference. Realistic feedback needed with only 5 days before presentation.
The students were made to feel at ease and that not being selected by industry at this point wasn’t the end of the world. Being chosen isn’t success.
Very difficult to get going in a sketch book, the first mark. Students needed to understand that the first step was to experiment and have fun from which come new ideas, from this comes the process of editing and refining especially when presenting to industry as it be crucial in whether they are chosen or not. I was afraid to step on the other tutors toes so held back a lot I might have added. I felt it wasn’t my place to say it. He was very kind and invited me to contribute and invited me to tutorials next term
When we handled the pieces it was more like a workshop and helped with the understanding. It made the student feel we were more interested.
It was important to keep ourselves as tutors and artists out of the students work.
